What is in a USB Flashdrive ?

Within each USB Flashdrive there is circuit board with typically 2 chips on board. One controller chip and the primary storage component – a flash memory chip. The USB Flash drive market is predominately supplied by the following Tier 1 Chip set manufacturers: Samsung, Intel, Toshiba, Hynix etc. Original products from these manufacturers are of very high quality and typically travel with a lifetime warranty. We would generally classify these chips from the above manufacturers as Grade A devices

Caveat Emptor

As pricing has become a major factor in bulk purchases, there has been, in recent years, a proliferation of sub-standard chip sets hitting the open marketplace. Failure rates of 30-40% have not been uncommon. To compound the issue, there have also been unscrupulous vendors who have been re-configuring lower capacity drives to appear larger (e.g. 2Gb units presented to the PC operating system as 8Gb units). In this instance, only when the true capacity is exceeded will the problem become apparent.

Flashdrive Chipset Categories

Grade A: Top grade flash memory from tier 1 manufacturers (Samsung, Intel, Toshiba, Hynix etc). Typically offering a lifetime guarantee. They are priced accordingly

Grade B: Chipsets from the Tier 1 manufacturers are supplied to authorized OEM suppliers who will package the wafer dye and brand with their product numbers. The flash memory is of the same reliability as Grade A, simply packed by the OEM Vendors. They can then offer a more price competitive product to the market. High reliability can be expected and warranties of 2 years.

Grade C: Where customers are offered significant price discounts in a competitive market, it is time for “caveat emptor” or buyer beware. There are sub standard silicon wafers in the marketplace which are rejects from the Tier 1 flash drive manufacturers. They are being packaged by some vendors and sold as original product. Failure of 30-40% would not be uncommon with these units.

Summary:

Grade A units are always recommended for the power user or corporate applications where integrity of the data is paramount
Grade B: Suitable for gifts, promotions, brand building etc where reliability is important but pricing is also a major factor
Grade C: To be avoided at all costs if the customer does not want to be burdened by issues relating to loss of data, product reliability and the resulting damage caused to the brand building exercise or promotional initiative for which they were purchased

Flashdrive.ie will only support Grade A and Grade B devices. Our Warranty returns are less than 0.03%. We advise our clients to make informed decisions when they make purchasing decisions.

USB TurnKey™ is embedded software that allows secure privileged-content management over a network. In other words, it unlocks your private web content for the user.

USB TurnKey™ also gives you control over restricted or exclusive content, while boosting user success with an easy to use solution. It allows you to offer documents and media to just the right people, and make it simple for them to gain access.

How does USB TurnKey™ work?

Each drive has a unique hardware ID. When the authentication service validates the appropriate ID, it grants access to your designated web content, whether it’s a web page or entire site. Data from the user’s subsequent activity is stored and can be downloaded and/or compiled into reports.

Examples of USB TurnKey™ application:

Accountant gives TurnKeys to the clients, granting them secure on-demand access to their tax returns, and updates their records at will.

Salesperson updates each member of his team with exclusive access to price lists and other important supplier information.

Musician distributes drives to promote the latest record, giving fans access to exclusive content and capturing their demographic and site behavior data.

Lawyer provides the clientele with instant, secure case file access from anywhere with a net connection.

Recycle your USB Flash Drive and turn it into a Portable Learning Centre for 5-12 year-olds

RecycleUSB has teamed with Sugar Labs to recycle USB flash drives into a standalone computer system which can run from any computer.

Each donated drive is loaded with Sugar, making it Sugar on a Stick. Sugar is a standalone computer operating system which runs off a USB flash drive. The Sugar Learning Platform is a free standalone computer environment, portable and interactive, which runs from a USB flash drive.

Here is how the USB flash drive recycling for Sugar works… All old and unused USB sticks (minimum 1GB memory stick) that are sent to RecycleUSB.com undergo a low-level formatting to clean the drive of any data. Then the “Sugar On A Stick” operating system is loaded onto a donated USB flash drive to make the portable learning computer and the finished product is sent to Sugar Labs for deployment to any number of locations throughout the world, such as Peru, South Africa or Thailand.

Sugar Labs are a non-profit provider of the Sugar Learning Platform, making Sugar On A Stick available for free to anyone and everyone. Sugar on a Stick can be loaded onto an ordinary 1GB USB flash drive [or larger] and used to reboot any PC or netbook directly into the award-winning Sugar environment.

The Sugar Learning Platform is a computer environment composed of Activities designed to help children from 5 to 12 years of age learn together through rich-media expression. Sugar is the core component of a worldwide effort to provide every child with the opportunity for a quality education—it is currently used by nearly one-million children worldwide speaking 25 languages in over 40 countries. Sugar provides the means to help people lead fulfilling lives through access to a quality education that is currently missed by so many.

USB Flash Drive Copy Protection and USB Flash Drive Encryption

There are some fundamental differences between USB copy protection and USB encryption to files on a USB Flash Drive:

USB copy protection secures a file or set of files so they cannot be copied - thus copy protection.

USB encryption scrambles the source files so they cannot be read unless you decrypt them.

There is a big difference between the two.

USB Encryption is the process of scrambling files and data so they cannot be accessed unless a password or key is supplied to reassemble the content and put everything back together. This process is known as decryption.

The fundamental use for USB encryption is to protect files and data in the event the USB stick is lost or stolen.

Where encryption and USB copy protection differ is with “encryption” once you have the password you can copy the data at will. With USB copy protection the files and data are locked to the device and cannot be copied off, regardless of the users desire.

USB copy protection is similar to encryption with the use of scrambling data and unscrambling data; however, USB copy protection has the added value of not allowing copies to be made. Copy protection wraps the data into a specialized algorithm to scramble the data, then uses a customized viewer to decrypt the data and be viewed. The viewer also requires specific hardware components to run, this requirement blocks the ability of the file to be copied and played later.

As one can see, USB copy protection is used by those who need to protect their intellectual property regardless of the user, whereas USB encryption is used for those who need to protect their data if lost or stolen.

As a side note - a USB stick with encryption can be formatted, thus removing all of the sensitive data yet USB copy protection locks the content to the stick in a Read Only partition so deleting or formatting are of no avail.

If you need USB Encryption try TrueCrypt. This is a free, open-source disk encryption software for Windows Vista/XP, Mac OS X, and Linux, suitable for for those needing a high level encryption tool.

TrueCrypt Main Features:

Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk.

Encrypts an entire partition or storage device such as USB flash drive or hard drive.

Encrypts a partition or drive where Windows is installed (pre-boot authentication).

Encryption is automatic, real-time (on-the-fly) and transparent.

Parallelization and pipelining allow data to be read and written as fast as if the drive was not encrypted.

Provides plausible deniability, in case an adversary forces you to reveal the password: Hidden volume (steganography) and hidden operating system.

Encryption algorithms: AES-256, Serpent, and Twofish. Mode of operation: XTS.

www.truecrypt.org

If you need USB copy protection and have content which should not be copied, regardless of the user, then visit Nexcopy for their USB secure flash drive solutions. They also use 128-bit AES encryption tools. www.nexcopy.com
